Can I paint external door handles - UPVC door

Hi,
I was hoping for a bit of advice as to whether it's possible to repaint an external door handle - the type that comes with UPVC doors. The paint has flaked off the handle so in some places its down to the metal and looks awfully scruffy.
I'd have to try and sand off the remaining paint first, but once I've done that, what sort of paint should I use, and do I need to prime the metal handle first.
I just don't want to make a mess of it by using the wrong stuff!
Thanks in advance

You need to rub down, then use a primer, then a spray paint.Mask the door and glass, not worth it imo.
But better is buy new powder coated.0 -
If you really want to paint it, i would take it off - It'll only be a 2 screws holding it on.
I would personally get a new one. By the time you've paid for sandpaper, primer, paint and your time and effort it's probably cheaper to get a new one.0 -
I'm sure you can buy a UPVC paint, but it might be better to get a new one like markie says, as its an external handle, and wondering if the UPVC paint wouldnt come off, specially with our weather.:eek:0

Thanks all,
I was worried about taking it off to replace because I didn't want to end up not being able to get a perfect match, but I've had a google and found a place that has a comprehensive guide to the measurements you need, and a massive range of handles. Now to get the tape measure out!
Thanks all for your help
