Is being refused a quote the same as being refused insurance?

Options
I recently rang up an insurance company to ask for a contents insurance quote, but after they heard I had a claim over 5 years ago, they said "we would like to decline to give you a quote"

The question is, when I speak to other insurance companies and they inevitably ask "have you ever been turned down for insurance or refused insurance before?" do I need to declare this?

Will this affect me if I was to make a claim in 11 months time, say? Could they turn around and say "you didn't declare this refusal for a quote!"

I even rang the Financial Ombudsman, but they wouldn't commit themselves.

Anyone have any experience of this?

Thanks in advance.

This is unusual as Insurers normally only ask for claims within the last five years.

Was this claim a subsidence or fire claim by any chance

No, refusing to quote you isn't anything to be concerned about. They don't have to give anyone a quote, and you don't need to mention it to others.

Neither - was just for a simple leak in the bathroom. Claim was probably a couple of thousand in total?

I agree with Quentin so you do not need to worry.

I'm surprised they refused to quote for this type of claim and especially as it was over five years ago as they would not normally know about it as companies normally ask for claims within three or five years.

Out of curiousity which Insurer was it

I know, it threw me when they asked if i had had any claims in the last '6 years'?

Even more so if it was the Swift Cover branch of Axa you asked to quote!
