Huge gas bill and problems changing suppliers PLEASE HELP

Options
hey
i have just received what i think is a massive gas bill for £650, although this is over a 4 month period ans split between 3 people as I'm in a shared house, i still feel that this is alot of money, unfortunately have nothing to compare it against so was hoping for an opinion and advice from you lovely people.

I'm with The utility warehouse, which is part of telecom plus. i have checked the readings on the meters for the bills and they match up so my problem isnt with the estimation but was wondering if i can get a lower price elsewhere.

Ive checked numerous price comparison websites but do not find them helpfully at all. My electricity is i believe provided by British gas and is on a per payment key thing.

now i understand the fact that the bill was so high was due to the fact that it was made over the winter and that there are 3 of us in the house and people sometimes forget to turn the heating of etc etc but want i really want to know is:

is it worth me switching to another gas supplier or a dual supplier?

please help

oh and by the way according to my bill the price of gas per kWh is 4.584 and we spend about £60 a month on electricity

You can easily get gas cheaper than 4.584p but you should double-check your bill. What is the Tier 2 price? I can't see a company charging 4.584p for a whole £650 of domestic gas.

Hmm, the only way you would be on 4.584p if you had mistakenly taken out their low user tariff. Maybe you could appeal to them that you were mis-sold and put on the wrong tariff? Who was it who suggested you should take out their low user tariff? One of their charming customers, by any chance*, or did you make the mistake yourself?

(I apologise if I'm misjudging the company and their advocates and you have just misread the bill ;) )

You would save even more by being more careful - you're spending more than us on gas and electricity, and we're a family of six with someone home most of the day.
  • in regards to being carefull i fully agree with you and it is something that we are working on, but as three seperate individuals it can be a bit of a pain. anyway as far as the bill goes it

    quotes as following:
    units= 414
    calorific value mj/m3 = 39.586
    kwh used =13174
    price per kwh = 4.584

now thats all alot of jargon to me so if anyone knows whats going on it would be much appriciated,

should i change gas supplier or not

oh and my tariff is on a 'deemed rate'

Put simply, you are being charged as if you have an imperial (cubic feet). Each meter unit is approx 31kwh.

If you have a metric meter, you need to tell them - a metric unit is only about 11kwh.

The key point here is 'deemed rate', this normally means you have not contacted the supoplier to discuss the best tariff and they have just put you a tariff that suits them. As a comparison if you were on the BG standard tariff in the eastern area you would pay 7.16p for the first 670kwh in a quarter and 3.41p after that. This would have given you a bill of about £480.
