This "free book" offer is run by Grolier, a company that I had great problems with in the past.

Their Customer Services are contactable by post, and very hard to get a response from them when you need one.

I returned some Disney "fun learning" books a couple of years ago, they said they'd not received them - and I couldn't find the receipt for sending them back, so I was expected to pay a couple of hundred quid.

Managed to get it sorted out, but it took forever - and I kept getting statements with a fine added for non payment.

Same here! I got a letter from a collection agency saying that I owed them £14 from a year before. Fortunately, I had proof I had paid. I thought it was sorted and a few months after that I received another letter from a collection agency.

did you just receive the free book with no strings attached? i.e. no mention of membership/trial books or whatever they can do to get money off you?

I got it yesterday thanks !
It came with a pre-pay postcard advertising their book club and inviting me to sign up. I ticked the book only option and it's all gone through fine.
