Need landline for 6 months

Hello,

I have moved into a new flat for 6 months and I need a landline (not for internet but because I make a lot of international calls). There is already a BT line there and a number but I just called BT and I'd need to sign up to a 12 month contract in order to re-activate the line. Problem is I don't know if I'll be there after 6 months and will have to pay a huge cancellation fee.

So my question is, are there any Landline suppliers that will set up your phone on a month by month basis?

Thanks for your help.

The Phone Co-Op can arrange line restarts and have just a 3 month minimum contract. Give them a call, they are usually very helpful.

Brilliant tip - It's only a £5 to reconnect if the line is already there and then £10 a month line rental - with a 3 month contract! Thanks so much.

The cheapest rental from Phone Co-op is actually £10.67 a month (for paying by dd), otherwise its £11.65.

Post Office homephone have no tie in at all, switch existing lines on for free, give you free calls every evening (from 6.00pm) and all weekend. Free calls to mobiles and 20 international destinations at weekends too.

Rental is £10.72/month, no matter how you pay your bills.

If you go via quidco you get £9.25 cashback.

As it is a co-operative, and I am a member I guess this is as close to owning "shares" as possible, as it's owned by members and not external shareholders who just want profit. On the same basis I guess I also own my bank and supermarket.

They've just been a lovely helpful bunch for everything they've ever done for me, and they just seem to be very upfront and honest with pricing. I like not having a connection fee and I know there are no hidden charges if I leave a service. I don't like this emerging rolling-contract idea which seems like another chance to penalize those who may be regularly moving, or are forced to move through no fault of their own (such as anyone privately renting and their landlord is selling up, for example).

I'll guess I'll have to try not to keep plugging the Phone Co-op too much. ;)

If you are a member, then you have put your money into it.

You don't become a member just by being a customer.

To be a member you have to invest in it, just as a shareholder of a supermarket/bank has to put their own money into it by buying one or more shares.

This moneysaving website is hardly the place to plug them - as shown there are better deals available.

    Not true.

For example you are a member of the cooperative bank if you have an account and have membership of the cooperative movement (which is free to apply for at http://www.co-operative.coop/). I received a cheque for around £30 just for banking with Smile and having various services from them.

    What is "Not true"?

You have to put money into the phone co-op to be a member. Totally true.

(It is nothing to do with the cooperative bank.)

Apologies, should have researched the phone co-op more. I see it is unrelated to the other co-ops, you reference to supermarkets etc. threw me.

    It's ok!

(My ref to supermarkets/banks was because Stuart_W mentioned them both in his post regarding whether or not he has a vested interest in plugging the phone co-op).
