Hi Evermore, My sister had her second hand operated on 2 weeks ago, I had both my hands operated on last year. It takes around 15-30 minutes done under local anaesthetic. I was chatting to the nurses and having a laugh the whole time my hands were being done. My right hand has been perfect, no signs of CTS whatsoever, they think they left my left hand a little too long with CTS, I still get pain in the fleshy part of the hand, like the thumb muscle. If you know what I mean. Even with this pain though, I would still recommend getting the repair done. It may not stop you dropping things, but should help with the CTS pain immensely. Immediately after the operation, when the anaesthetic is wearing off, you may discover quite severe pins and needles, but that is to be expected. You are wrapped in a bandage that looks rather like a boxing glove for the first 3-5 days, then after around 7-10 days the stitches are removed. I would recommend anyone who has CTS to have the op, if my experiene is anything to go by.
Of course, rather than giving medical advice, I am only sharing my experience

Well i suppose as with most things the op will work for some people but not for others, i had the op about 8 years ago on my right hand,(CTS in both hands) , it was very painful for a couple of weeks after the op, i had it done under a general anthesetic, i still get pain in it now, so it didn`t fully work for me, its not as bad as it was, but its still there, so i never got my left hand done as its not as bad in that hand & can put up with it. x0

Hiya how bad is the after op time? How much time is needed off work? I'm having the op and was wondering how much time is needed to get back to usual work. ta0

Had it initially almost 30 years ago when pregnant, that went away after giving birth.
Got it back again several years ago, and had the op, about three years ago.
The numbness & tingling etc gone, but my wrist is quite weak now and have problems opening things and lifting heavy’ish things (like a heavy saucepan), but I was told that the area was vey compressed and it took them a long while to do the op.
I think they are quite quick to offer to do the op, but on the other hand the quicker the compression is sorted the less damage to the area.
What shocked me the most was I told work I would be off for about a week, but I was given a sick note from the hospital for a month! That was hard for me as I don’t take time off sick and in 38 years (not counting the CT time off) I have had less than two weeks off work sick.
Mine was done under Local Anthesetic that was a bit strange!
It was quite painful initially and quite numb, I did have to loosen the bandage a little around the fingers, the swelling goes down quite quick. The bandage is like a boxing glove (as already mentioned).
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
