will I get charged for cash withdrawal from non abbey machine .
I received a letter from abbey saying I may get charged for using non abbey machines .Does this actually happen or is it Abbey covering itself

They are just covering themselves. I don’t know, at present, any UK mainstream bank which charges for cash withdrawals using the debit card of another bank. In addition, usually, they have written outside their machines, that they will not charge. If your card is a service card, I do not think, they'll work on other banks.

But there are private cash machines, usually in- or outside of grocery or betting shops that do charge for debit card withdrawals.
(I am not talking about Tesco or Sainsbury, they have their own banking arm.) These private machines, which are also operating within the LINK system, do charge. (But I believe, they have to advise you about their charges, before you press ‘enter’.)

So the logo LINK on it’s own, is not a guaranty that there is no charge.
