Direct Debit guarantee?? time limit?

Can anybody tell me if there is a time limit on the direct debit guarantee thing.

I feel like a right plum, I save monthly for the projected cost of our car and home insurances in a seperate bank account that I don't use on a regular basis. I have statement set to online only but TBH I forgot my log in details a long time ago because I had no real need to check the account regularly.

Anyway I asked for the security details to be reset and sent to me and they arrived yesterday.

To my shock and amazment a company called 'policy admin servs' has been debiting £9.99 per month from my account since 4th April 2007!!! I feel such an idiot for not checking before.

I googled 'policy admin servs' and it threw up a link for a company that apparently deals in mobile phone insurance. I called the number on their website and a very nice woman tried to search for an account using my name and address which drew a blank. I then gave her the referance number that shows un on the direct debit controls section of my online bank and that also drew a blank  She suggested I contact my bank.

I called my bank and the man there made sure the DD was cancelled from today onwards but refused to pass to a department who deals with fraud as he said it is probably a 'keying error' because there is no other suspicious activity and I should write and request all payments be refunded to me unter the 'direct debit guarantee' but he thinks there is a limit of 3 months. Is this true? The bank is RBS.

I feel like such a fool,

  • Did you take out a contract phone around April 2007? I ask because I got signed up for a direct debit for the same company without my consent after picking up a phone at Phones 4U, and it sounds like it could be the same deal.

    Hi Shelfstacker.

I do have a mobile from phones4u but think that was mid 2006 and that comes of my bills account. I will dig out the paperwor and double check.

  • Did you manage to resolve this? I've just noticed I'm paying 'policy admin servs' 6 quid a month and I'm not really sure why either!
