Painting embossed glass?

Hi,
Hope someone can help me as I'm slightly making this up as I go along... In our office we have a glass panel, that was originally part of the french doors that led outside to the side return. It's high up, above what was the original back door. We extended the kitchen into the side return so the panel is now redundant, and no light comes through it as there is a wooden panel behind it. However, it is pretty embossed glass, original to the house, and now that we're about to do up our office I'd like to try and make the most of it.
My idea was to paint it with a translucent glass paint so that it catches the light from the room, but then I get stuck. What kind of paint would be best? Is there some technique where I add colour and then rub some off to further enchance the embossed glass? When I've used glass paint before i've found it hard to get an even coverage and I'm worried about making the panel look terrible. There's a little shelf below it and in my mind I put three little tea lights there ad it's really cute, but in reality I may screw it all up. Any ideas?
Thanks
Sarah

I have painted a door with a leaf pattern glass. I used four different colour glass paints and just painted each leaf a different colour. It looked very pretty. when it started to look a bit tatty I scrubbed it off with a pan scrubber.
I wouldn't worry too much about the evenness of the paint, I thought it added to the overall look.0
