Croydon was slightly quieter on Saturday too, and bigger shops such as the Disney store and SofaWorkshop have gone too. Though I heard SW may be going under so that'd explain that one.
I like the lack of crowds but not if all the shops are going to go!

I noticed the Disney store had gone, that did surprise me.

If a big corporation like that is feeling the squeeze it really isn't promising.

I've not been to Croydon for a while, but aren't you seeing similar in Crawley too?

County Mall is beginning to look a bit like a ghost town - every time I go I'm quite shocked that there seem to be more closing down signs.

I find it all quite sad, although I know that I am guilty of buying most things online or in the supermarkets so it's people like me that cause these things to happen.

I shop in Crawley too, its my nearest big town. I haven't noticed that.

OP Bluewater is miles better than Croydon.

Haven't shopped in Croydon for a couple of years - tend to go to Kingston,Guildford or Bluewater which are much better IMO.

My own home town is like a ghost town

I wouldn't say County Mall is like a ghost down at all. It was packed on Saturday and the only empty shop is what used to be the Disney Store.

Come to Brighton instead...it still has little pockets of soul.

Only snag is you are better off coming by train...parking charges going up near me from 80p per hr tp £2.40 pr hr.
Brilliant timing on the parking charges there - some jobsworth should get promoted for that. How about free parking and keep business going - no point in paying for parking if there's no shops left.

Crawley is my nearest large town and I went in there a couple of Saturday's ago. It did strike me as being a lot quieter than I remember it and even Debenhams didn't seem as busy as I expected it to be.

The last few times I have been shopping in Kingston on the weekend it is just as busy as it ever was, and everyone seems to be carrying around bulging bags of shopping as usual.

The only thing that shows the recession biting is the very high number of shops that are now empty.

I can happily / unhappily (delete dependent on your point of view) that The Trafford Centre in Manchester still seems as busy as normal. It's like all the churches, mosques and synagogues in the whole of the North West have been closed, with a sign placed on the door reading "We're not bothering with religion anymore. If you still fancy going to heaven, get dolled up like a footballer's wife and head for the Trafford Centre."

You get to see a strange breed of orange, large blonde haired, big-breasted, tracksuited woman you don't really get to experience anywhere else (well, apart from Liverpool). They tend to be with men with large neck muscles who have tribal tattoos up their arms (think George Clooney in From Dusk Till Dawn) and Diesel t-shirts. Makes the trip worthwhile.

Either that or Aberdeen (never quite worked out why Aberdeen crops up on here so often).
