Home Insurance Cancelled\Lapsed

Hi All,

I got into money difficulties and stupidly I didn't pay my home insurance and the insurer ended the agreement. I had the been with the insurer for 2 years.

I didn't really realise the consequence of having insurance cancelled through failure to pay. I just thought it was a service like cancelling your cable, you would settle your account and just go find another,

I need to get insurance and was hoping for some advice. The first place I went to get insurance I was asked if I have ever had insurance cancelled.

Do all the insurers keep a database of cancelled policies? I'm certainly not going to lie but I'm wondering whether a different insurance company will ask the same question about a policy being cancelled?

I realise I've been an idiot but its making me sick with worry so I want to sort this out.

Thanks!
John

was it just a monthly payment agreement whereby if you didn't pay then they just stopped covering you?

if so then that's not the same as having an agreement cancelled (I don't think... someone else correct me if I'm wrong)

I thought cancelling was when you did something serious like committing fraud against them or not declaring something that was later important in terms of a claim and they cancelled your policy for that sort of reason

In your case you've effectively cancelled it by not paying it, which is different to them cancelling it... ....

    someone else comment please!!

Most insurers would ask if you've ever been refused insurance as opposed to having it cancelled, so I would just imagine you were unlucky with the first quote you had.

By no means are you the first person to have insurance cancelled through non-payment, and provided you paid any outstanding money to your last insurer there should be no problem.

Try scouring the yellow pages for a local broker who'd be able to advise you better, or if you prefer browsing online it might be worth giving the insurer a call before you sign up.
