Fishmonger & Grocer

Options
I already have a great local butcher (well 10 miles away) but I am desperate to find a good fishmonger and a decent grocer - Does anyone know of any in or around the Cardiff area?

there is a fishmonger in cardiff central market, or one in penarth on the hill by the main train st (not sure if it comes under victoria rd?)

grocer - you will also find a store in cardiff central market, along the back of the big building that iceland etc in city centre are a part of (not sure of the road name but you'd come out by the cia and the cinema)

cant comment on the quality of any of these, they are the only ones i can think of off the top of my head.

for a high quality butcher, i can recommend david lush in glebe street penarth - absolutely stunning meat from him, but might be a bit of a way to go for a few rashers of bacon lol!

  • As above I can reccommend David Lush Butchers in Penarth. I started using him last year and the whole family rave about his meat and homemade pies, burgers etc - I can't say I'm veggie.
Would be interested in a decent greengrocer in Cardiff or Penarth too.
  • Funny enough - Lush is the butcher I already use (although it is the other side of cardiff for me).

I've tried central market for both fish and veg and to be honest I wasn't that taken on either there - any more more ideas would be great.

Also considering I already travel to the butcher I don't mind traveling for decent fish & veg. (well within reason :D )

seeing as you are in penarth anyway then (small world :D ) i would definatly check out the fishmongers. not sure whether it is classified as station road or victoria road, but either way, it is just down the hill off stanwell road by Penarth train station ( not the dingle station)

in case you aren't familiar with penarth.... from Lush's, face down hill towards the town. turn left at the st fagans pub, and walk towards the clock on the roundabout. use the two zebra crossings, and carry on down stanwell road, past clarks, hsbc , washington gallery etc. cross at the lights so you are now on the same side as westbourne school. cross again at the other set of lights to put you on the opposite side of the road (outside the railway pub garden). walk up the hill until you reach the zebra crossing (the pharmacist on the corner, ivor owen, is fab for brand name toiletries at cheap prices, and small gifts). once over the crossing, turn left and proceed down the hill. you cant miss the fishmongers - he normally has pheasant or similar hanging outside the shop lol!!!

foxy's deli (a few doors away) is also well worth a look. neil, the guy who owns the place, was on changing rooms once. random fact of the day for you there :rotfl:

i cant speak for the quality of the fishmonger's produce, however the fact that he has managed to stay in business when he is relatively tucked out of the way speaks volumes to me.

as for fruit/veg, perhaps if you told us what you had in mind we could help more?

i know that there is a welsh farmers market in the car park of the penarth cons club once a month (when you reach the zebra crossing by the fishmongers, cross onto the far side of the road - its behind the big brown wooden fence, you cant miss it!)

  • Yeap - it's a small world :D - To be honest I would love to find a butcher closer but I can't find anyone as good as Lush!

Thanks for the fishmonger - I'll give them a go on the weekend. The farmers market sounds great - do you have any more details such as when the next one is?

In terms of veg I'm just looking for anyone decent - I'm getting fed up with buying tastless veg from the supermarket.

this is a link to the website about the vale farmers market - seems it may have moved to westbourne school (a few yards away from the cons club!)

as for veg - im not loyal to one particular grocer - it depends on where i am and what i need.

there are several in penarth i can suggest - one in glebe street (just up the hill from Lush's and to the right...next door to another butcher).

there is one in windsor arcade, and there is also one on cornerswell road. just shout if you need directions, and happy hunting!

I can think of several grocers I wouldn't recommend in Cardiff!

You could support local producers by trying their organic meat, cheese, veg, eggs, bread, cider, chutneys and all sorts of other foody treats at the Riverside Real Food Market, Fitzammon Embankment (over the river from the Millennium Stadium) from 10am - 2pm on Sundays. http://www.riversidemarket.org.uk/

However, I always get carried away and buy far too much (would Martin approve?) :D
