Halifax faster bill payments

I pay off my store/credit cards each bill via bank credit from the Halifax.

My PC at home hadn't been working and when I got it back I realised I only had 4 days to make the payment before the deadline to Debenhams. I duly logged on and made the bill payment and had an email from the Halfiax to confirm it had arrived that same day at the recepients bank.

My next statement came through from Debehams and there is no payment showing even though there were transactions for a few days after my money supposedly hit their bank account. When I rang up to query they said it takes upto 5 days from reaching their bank account for them to apply the money to my account.

They did refund the £12 late payment fee as they could see I had paid but even so I didn't realise they could take so long after having the money in their account to apply to my account.

I paid M&S at the same time and when my bill came through the money was credited to my account on the same day it hit their bank account.

This isn't anything to do with the way Halifax processed it. They sent it to a particular sort code and account number (the collection account for your credit card), and it arrived there straight away.

However, it's Debenhams' processes at the other end that caused the delay. This is fairly common with credit card companies, where they will take several days to apply it to your account.

The Debenhams card is managed by GE Capital ..... an incompetent organisation! My wife paid hers, in full and prior the due date, in store a few months ago. And they wrote to her several weeks later to advise that as no payment had been received - they had suspended the card.

Turned out - that for reasons we never bottomed - they had altered the account number between the statement and the payment. But had allowed the payment to settle on the old account. Took 5 letters / 3 statements before they eventually got it right, and rescinded interim interest charges. And the most inept response of all of them was from their Complaints Dept - who waived the charges but added a note that none of it would have happened had the initial payment been made on time! Unbelievably bad.

So I'm not surprised they take for ever to update customer accounts. Be grateful if it gets to the correct one!

I made a payment to Capital one on 9 March which took 3 days even to be 'posted' on the account (i.e 'Transaction Date' 9/3, 'Posting Date 12/3') - and another day before this was viewable - 4 days in total..

There's no reason why CC issuers can't update overnight and show these on the account the very next day. As long as customers receive 'value' for their same day faster payments it doesn't really matter when they show up however...

If it's run by GE, they're part of Santander now! - So don't expect faster payment implementation any time soon!
