Yep - been doing that 4 a few years then suddenly - having made ths SO change get the on screen message that they will phone to validate, and accounts are locked until they have done so. To cap it all the phone number on the account is her old one

They changed this aspect months ago - and wrote to all customers / put it on Statements / online etc.

It's nothing to do with the fact you changed an SO. It's the fact you used a different PC to the one you normally use? They record the IP address ..... and you get an automated intercept if you Logon from a different one. And you then have a choice of the numbers you have recorded with them .... for them to ring you on. And they will block the account if they can't get through to you - as they assume someone else is accessing your account. It's their way around providing card readers.

Been several different threads on it :-

Cheers for that - (erroneous logic on their behalf though - I use at least 4 different PCs to access my own accounts - ) - but it did highlight for us the problems for some elderly people having to deal with the security questions, when there is little chance they even understand the question let alone know the answers

No one seems to have seen the point that worries me the most - the HSBC paid out on cheques with a signature unaceptable for an account address change - so the op could have withdrawn ALL cash in the account, but not change the account address!

You will find that few, if any banks check all the signatures on each and every cheque that they process. It simply costs too much and takes too much time for little gain.
