    got there in the end, got new set of drill bits and went straight in. think the ones i was using were pretty old and crap basically, thanks for all the info and advice guys!

    ex blind Fitter, Passing any PVC window makers in your area. ask them for a few SELF DRILLING screws. these will cut their own hole and thread in steel lintels via a cordless drill or slow start mains drill and a good quality P2 bit.
    saves hours of fun, and will cut thru' the thin plaster too.
