Please could somebody help me. I am currently on an NTL phone line and am on the basic talk unlimited package but i am paying about £30 for call charges. I have a mixture of short local calls and also mobile calls to myself and partner. I have seen various articles with regards to 1899 18185 but am really unsure as to which option would be the best to save me money in the long run.Could anyone please offer me some advice

From a cable landline, you can use both 1899 and 18185 by dialling through their freephone access numbers.
Call charges differ from BT landline users though - 1899, for example, charge cable landline users 3p connection and 0.5p/minute for calls to UK 01/02 numbers whereas they only charge BT landline users the 3p connection.
Having said that, both will save you money on the NTL call charges.

http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.phpTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
https://www.1899.com would be fine for your peak/evening 01/02 calls.and mobile calls through their 0808 cable access number. The only advantage of using 18185 is you will get your mobile calls 1p a minute cheaper at weekend, and they have a cheap peak 0870 rate.
Also consider:

And https://www.phone.coop who both cater for cable customers.
You can also use the various access 0844 numbers listed in the MSE Call Checker.A connection charge of 6p will apply with cable whether you get through or not.
