Recompense for overcharging?

Options
We have just found out that we have been overcharged since 2003 for gas, and they owed us a huge amount of money. They have sent us a cheque, with no word of an apology. Has anyone sought recompense for loss of interest or financial hardship experienced due to overcharging?

As long as you have got your money back, I'd leave it at that.

I think it would depend on why you were overcharged. If they took DDs twice or calculated you bill on an imperial meter rather than a metric one, you would be able to check statements and bills and stop it going on. If it was beyond your control to see you were being overcharged, maybe there would be more of a case.
  • MagentaSue,
It was due to account being calculated with imperial formula, using metric readings - we had the meter checked once several years ago, but were assured that we were just extremely high user.

If that had happened to me a couple of years ago, I'd have been the same as you. Knowing better now, if I moved into a house with a gas meter, I'd be checking the bills to make sure they were converting the units correctly.

What I'm saying is that the suppliers could argue that the units and kwh are shown on bills and statements so the customer should point out the mistake as they can check to see what sort of meter they have. A lot (most?) people are probably not aware of this but they could argue that it is up to customers to check that bills are calculated accurately. So, I don't think they would feel compensation is justified.
