Authorised payments on lost card

I'll try to keep this short.
My other half joined a particular website 2 years ago, he ended up forgetting about it and he didn't realise that the payment for this site was taken out every month onwards. It was never a direct debit, and has always been seen as a card transaction (says so on statement)
Anyways, when he realised that this payment had been going out every month (didn't notice as theirs loads of things going in and out of the account) he found the website and stopped the reoccuring payments.
Now the problem is, when this was going on, my other half lost his debit card last summer. He rang up barclays to say the card was lost/stolen and blocked it. Even after this card was blocked, the said website still was able to take out the monthly fee from his account. It did this for about 5 months after the card was registered lost, until he unsubscribed from the site.
He rang up the foreign call centre and tried to explain the situation, but the person on the line kept getting confused with direct debits and so we gave up.
I rang up lloyds telephone banking and asked them, and they said that the card should've been voided and so no payments should've gone through the lost card, but she couldn't officially say this as it's a different bank.
So basically, he's going to the barclays bank monday morning, but we just want to know.... Should barclays not have authorised the payments to the website after the card was made void and if so, can he reclaim the money that was taken?
Thanks in advance

What happened was that a Continuous payment authority was set up. This could only be stopped by your wife telling the company to stop taking the payment.
The fact that a card is lost does not stop the CPA so I'm afraid she will get the brush off from Barclays next week.
She also had the opportunity to stop these payments after receipt of every monthly statement.0 -

These are notoriously difficult to cancel and are the worst kind of payment to set up.

It is actually only the retailer who can cancel this type of payment and even if you lose your card and it is cancelled you are still liable for the payment and it will therefore be taken. If you have one of these set up on a credit card you will not be able to cancel the card until the continuous authority mandate is stopped.0 -

Thanks for the info. By the way, I'm the female (who noticed the odd payments on his statements) and my other half is the male (who didn't notice he was signed up to a dating site for two years)
I'll pass on the information. It's a shame these things happen, but it's better to know where we stand instead of chasing after money we'll never get back.
I take it that it wouldn't of been up to the bank to notify my other half of the fact this particular transaction was on going even though the bank card was made void.
Again thanks for the informationTSB: £4900

Yeh don't get offended by the whole male/female thing, its hard to determine whose who. People think I'm female
