I know youv'e got a lot of fingers in a lot of pies, plus having had your hands full with tomcats! but I was following your instructions and ran combofix as a last resort as everything else had been tried. (Now I'm off to sulk in a corner after being shouted at in public!):o

    no no

I ment unsupervised. If I ask you to run it then thats that. You made it sound ike you kept on running it!
Plus ~ if it ran sound AFTER the scan then Combofix isnt at fault clearly
But I suspect the hard drives probably at fault more than anything

Yes, a full format and reinstall, reinstalled Kaspersky, Spybot (without tea timer), Malwarebytes and cc cleaner. Ran a scan with them all and all ok.
Oh and installed service pack 3 and all updates. (did I do well?)

There was no need to scan with the anti virus progs as its impossible to be infected on a fresh format and install
    Dont forget SUPERANTISPYWARE too.

Id run a DISK CHECK every month or so too to see how the hard drive holds up

Take into consideration that anything you plug into it MAY be infected! (usb drives etc)

    Hope all goes well :)

Struggled to boot up today, tried about 7 or 8 times before actually loading windows without crashing and going back to the beginning. Going off our previous conversations do you reckon it's time for a new hard drive?
If so, where would I get one from and which type do I need? I don't mean the size in gigabytes but the one to fit this model of pc.
Once fitted is it a matter of re-installing windows and all drivers and programmes (which I'm quite used to now as I've re-installed windows xp several times in the past month!) At the mo I've got a 40 gig hard drive fitted and it seems adequate as it's only used for e-mails and surfing the net plus my daughter uses it for her homework. I'm trying to get as much info now before it gives up the ghost altogether. Would I have to strip the pc down to get the info or can I get the info on screen?

P.S. I've done all the virus scans and it all seems clean.

Its either the hard drive. Or because you didnt run a FULL format? (Ive tried 'quick' formats and theyve always gone wrong at some point)

even a computer that "won't boot up" leaves clues as to it's problem, whether a nice bsod message, a bios fail message, a beepcode..something...anything...
After 7 years I'd be dumping it...but...if it normally behaves for you, and you are happy with its performance, just hope it doesn't breal again...and if it does, report back with more info on the error.
As Marty suggests...after 7 years components may be beginning to fail :(
Where would I find these messages? Are they saved and stored? The only ones Ive received today after taking 7 or 8 attempts to boot up are that the screen goes black and it informs me that there is no signal (which is the same screen as when I turn it off and the monitor is on) and it then attempts to load windows once again. After 8 attempts it finally loaded up.

I'm sure it was a FULL format as I deleted the old windows, reformatted the partition when it was raw (which took about 3 hours to format) I' ve previously done a quick format but not this time. I also followed the instructions in "Easy xp trouble shooting" book.
