Why dont you all just wait until all the prices are increased?
POWERGEN has just increased Gas up 24%, Electricity up 18%.
I shall wait a few weeks yet before i decide what to do.0 -
I have just copied the following from "supplier and tariff details" on www.energyhelpline.com
"British Gas offer a standard tariff and two online tariffs - Online and Click Energy. These tariffs are much cheaper than the standard tariff as they include both lump sum discounts and discounted rates. Any customer switching to an online tariff should be aware that they will no longer receive a paper bill.
They also offer a capped tariff until 2009 that is ideal if you want to have peace of mind andn avoid any further price rises."
Energyhelpline also say that Powergen is Capped until March 2010.

not read all the thread, but answered following post on mortgage board http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1664877#post1664877
-- if gas price is capped - does that mean they have to drop it in line with other changes or not( ie general gas prices / in line with their other tariffs ) ? whats the small print say ?Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
I do wonder about this wait and see attitude? You can capp your bill now cheaper than taking the hit of a 25% price rise. On most it does not tie you in, you can come out if the prices start to drop. To wait will take away your best advantage getting in before the rise.0

My understanding is that the use of the terms Fixed and Capped is being applied to Energy prices in the same way that they are applied to Mortgages.
I did a quick bit of research and found the following on U-Switch :
Fixed or capped price plans
Fixed or capped price plans offer a fixed or capped price for a period of time (usually 18 months to two years) which may include a small premium on the supplier's standard unit rate.
Who should choose this option?
Fixed or capped price plans are good for those who want certainty and to know they will not be affected if there are further price rises.
Capped price plans
A capped price plan sets an upper limit on the price you will pay per unit of gas or electricity used. If there is a price rise you will not pay more than the upper limit. If prices come down your price per unit may come down too.
The price used by the uSwitch.com calculator is the capped rate and your cost will not rise above this level.
Fixed price plans
Fixed price plans fix the price you pay for a unit of gas or electricity at a set amount. Good news if there is a price rise, but if prices fall you will still continue to pay your fixed price.
Please note: With these types of plans it is the price you pay per unit and the daily service charge (if applicable), that are fixed or capped. Your actual bills will vary by the amount of gas and electricity you use.
The link to the above can be found here:

by following the link 'who should choose this option'.
I would ensure that you check with the appropriate supplier what they mean by fixed andcapped, but the definitions above appear to be the generally accepted ones.I am an IFA (and boss o' t'swings idst)You should note that this site doesn't check my status as an IFA, so you need to take my word for it.
