Anyone been to Rhineland Germany?

Me and bf are off to Rhineland Germany on a BOGOF trip in a weeks time. It was a real bargain. Anyone got any tips on what to see when we get there?

Where exactly will you be based? There's loads to do in Cologne, and there's lots of nice places between Koblenz and Rüdesheim, but there's a fair distance between those places on the Rhine. Can you be specific?
  • One piece of advice - never ask a German for directions.
All they'll ever say is " No - ve ask ze questions " !

It's a lovely part of the world, I have been to Clogne and Koblenze a couple of times, if you get a chance to go in Cologne Cathederal it's breathtaking, even if you are not religious it's a feat of building which, when you consider the tools and the lifting gear were primitive to say the least, is amazing.

I would also recommend a cruise on the Rhine, it's a good way to see the scenary and have a great time!

Been to Berlin, I know its not where you are going...but...up to a certain pont, Nobjocki, is right...
Germans tend not to speak english or if they do they tend not to like to speak it. You might find the Germans in the south to be more accomodating specially since you are near the French/Belgian/Dutch border.

In other words get a good map... and a compass! :)

One thing germans are good at is organisation, so try going to a Tourism Info desk in Cologne, they will have loads of info and on top of that they might have 1 week or 3 days "season" tickets to attractions, it works out much cheaper!!!

Hope you have a nice time!!!

The area we are going to is a village quite near Cologne and were going on day trips to Cologne, a tour of the valleys and Koblenz.

Only 4 days to go. Can't wait :T

    Kerpen??

How long are you going for and how are you travelling?

It will be COLD this time of year, but hopefully clear skies.

Koln is a big city and the Cathedral is impressive.

Koblenz is a lovely village on the Rhine.

    Useful info here

Koblenz is a medium sized town, at the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine, with a very nice triangular bit where the rivers meet. The old part of town is very nice. It's also got a huge, impressive fortress high on a cliff above the Rhine.
Cologne cathedral is absolutely astounding, as has been posted above. Cologne also has a really good chocolate museum/ factory, about 15 mins walk south from the cathedral, right on the river.

Sounds like the same BOGOF we are booked for in early April to Altenahr in the Ahr Valley with Travelscope. If it is I'd be interested in any comments when you come back.

Another thing! Trains are so much cheaper on the continent, if I remeber well DB (Deutsch-Bahn) has weekly all inclusive "season tickets... I think... I can't remeber how we paid for our tickets and what we got... Old age is approaching fast!!! :)
