tiling of new bathroom

Hi,

We have had a new extension built to house a new bathroom which we intend to tile. :T

My question is does the bathroom need to be plastered before we tile the walls or is it just as good to tile directly on to the plasterboard?

Obviously the latter is less work and less expensive but will the finished job be just as good?:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Any advice very gratefully received.

Cheers ktj.

We tiled directly onto plaster board and it looked perfectly all right. However, later on when we wanted to take the tiles off, they brought great areas of board off with them. We then had to cut out the affected sections and replace them. This did not occur when the tiles were stripped from a skimmed plaster board wall. Just a point to bear in mind.

We're having a house renovated and our builders have plasterboarded and plastered over it before tiling.

you are better of leaving the plasterboard bare and spending the extra tanking the wet areas

Plastering on plasterboard reduces the weight of tiles that can be used per sqm

What sort of plasterboard have they used in the bathroom? Is it the water resistant high load type that you can tile on and get wet without it falling to bits,or is it bog standard plasterboard

Its perfectly ok to tile directly onto plasterboard as whether its platered or not,if you knock the tiles off at some future date,it will probably be wrecked anyway.
