British card with USA address, possible?

Options
I'm going to be doing a lot of travel between here and the US over the next few months. Is it possible to get a British credit card that will accept a US address for billing (I could happily put our US office down as the address).

I would like to be able to make purchases online when I'm out there, and a lot of the websites accept US [billed] cards only. Or perhaps there is a company that can provide me a US billed, $ card on my account?

Thanks in advance,
H :T

No idea if they would, but I'd guess Amex could be the first ones to ask

Probably not. Card companies will probably only post to UK only addresses. However if you want to check your balance etc, most will have online facilities for that.

Also re online purchases. I have bought many times on US sites without any problems on my UK issued credit card.

If you have time to apply, sort youself out with a Nationwide credit card as it has no foreign loading charges, which pretty much every other credit card has.

First thing you can do is if you are having it delivered to you in the US, you can have a seperate billing address in the UK. The only exception to this is (as far as i know) booking tickets for flights.

  • I found recently in the States that most (but not all) companies will accept a UK billing address with a US shipping address, though occasionally I had to provide evidence eg e-mailing them a scan of my credit card statement.

Off the top of my head the ones that wouldn't do this included Greyhound (coach tickets) and Fresh Direct (grocery delivery). Most places like CD retailers, Amazon etc are fine.

Drugstores like Duane Reade sell pre-pay credit cards (I saw Visa and Amex and I expect Mastercard does one too) which you register to a US address as they post the credit card there (the one you buy in the shop is a fake). I don't know if an office address would work but can't see why not - check them out next time you're there.

However those are my existing cards that i had while i was in the uk..

It's funny you should mention this I had a problem buying my American mother-in-law a Christmas present because of this situation. On the website I chose there was no place to put a UK address. So I contacted the company and they said that I would have to buy from their UK website. Problem sorted.... Well actually no as the UK website does not ship to the US and this is where my M-in-L (which is actually quite nice as we live in the UK :rotfl: ). So I phone them again and they said there was nothing they could do they needed a US billing address.

It was getting near Christmas so I was starting to panic so I decided to go to their website and put in the address of my M-in-L as the billing address. I also included a US phone (which rings here via voip) just incase there were any problems. The transaction went through successfully (which should worry me a little I guess) and I was able to view it online a few days later on my online credit card statement (Nationwide). Subsquently I made 2 other purchases using the same method with the same company for my OH's Grandparents.

I am not suggesting that you do this I am just telling you how I got around this problem with one particular retailor.

Would be interested to hear if you come up with a workable solution or I may have to stop buying gifts for my in laws :D
