ensuite door width in new extension

I have been trying to find out if I can fit a 2' 3" (686mm) door to my ensuite or if I have to stick to 2' 6" (762mm).

I'm really tight on space and need to save any I can, the door frames I bought do both sizes (the smaller must be for something?).

The work will be inspected by building control as its part of an extension so I need to be sure it will pass so can't take any chances.

I have searched everyware online and cant find any information.

Don't want to sound like I'm stating the obvious, but why don't you ring the building inspector and ask?

Your right but thats Monday and everything now depends on getting the stud wall up (plumbing, plastering electrics) and I can't afford to loose the weekend.

Stupid of me I know but I did not think to phone them before they closed on Friday.

I think that all doors now need to be able to fit a wheelchair through. Regardless of where they are, and whether or not anyone is every likely to use a wheelchair.

    (there's sense for you!)

I think you've been reading the daily mail too much. I'm not even bothering to check this before declaring it nonsense.

See page 27 ("circulation within the entry storey of the dwelling") and Table 1 on the same page in Building Regs Part M. It would appear to me that a minimum width of 750mm is only required if your ensuite is on the same level as the entrance to the property. So if your in a house and the ensuite is upstairs my interpretation is you can get away with a 27 inch door. If i were you i'd confirm with building control too in case i've missed a regulation elsewhere - but at least you know where to look now.

I live in a 1950s bungalow and the bathroom door is 27inches wide and all the other doors are 30 inches - historically they used to always put 27inch wide doors in bathrooms. If you do go with a 27inch door make sure you can get the bath and shower enclosure in!

I have completed my loft conversion within the last 6 months to full building regs. Even though I do have a 2' 6" door to my ensuite, the door to my stairs is a 2' 3" fire door!!! The inspector never batted an eylid when I pointed this out and this is the main escape route - not a door to a toilet!!!

So I wouldn't be to fussed re your issue - unless of course you plan on putting on weight:rotfl:

I am minded to agree. As far as I know, I can refuse to admit wheelchair users to my property if I wish and I fully intend to do so :D

yes you can although have had one building control officer highlight it a few years ago. Just showing his authority and signed it off anyway.
