How to start with construction of my dream house?

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good resource to find contractors? I have been looking online and all I have seen are sites where you have to describe the job then wait to get called from a contractor or if I find a directory type of site there is a limited number of contractors in my area, but I know there are many more. I am trying to build my first house and I was planning on hiring all the contractors so I need a good resource to find them. Something with reviews and article would also be very beneficial, please let me know if anyone knows of a good place to look.

Avoid Timberframe like the plague - one company in particular which I will not mention on a public site

  • We are in the process of building a new house

We have asked builders we have had people recommend

We live in rural Scotland so have advantages of knowing our neighbours; BUT what have you to loose in asking people who you can see locally have just finished self building who their builder was and how he did?

Why not ask umpteem builders to quote you and then treble check their references?

We are going to go with the combanation of a recommended builder with price, and let the builder do the "project" management' actually a builder who a yr ago was buying sites and building for his own profit; if he'd employ xx for his own build then :D

We will be buying our own "bits" i.e sockets; light and power sockets; silly wee bits; but bits we can buy and store in advance and not pay over the odds for

Before you do anything, get yourself a copy of Mark Brinkley's book "The Housebuilder's Bible".

It has answers to questions you haven't even thought of asking yet.
  • Best of luck to you building your first house, it’s an adventure. I would recommend talking to your neighbors and friends and see if they know any contractors they worked with in the past. Since I’m sure you already did that you should try http://www.jobtrio.com/ I found that they have a very easy to use search. They have the biggest list of contractors I have seen to date, plus you can write reviews and read their articles.

New poster comes on to ask a question, then a day later another new poster comes on to post details of a website.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I must have too much time on my hands, but a quick Google search for :"They have the biggest list of contractors I have seen to date, plus you can write reviews and read their articles." comes up with a fairly long list of other websites that have been spammed by this guy, all with the same subject etc.

Time for the mods to intervene?
