Red Nose Record - Why?

I didn't watch Red Nose last night, didn't know it was on until I was flicking round the channels about 11pm or so.vivatifosi wrote: »It was worth £5 of my money to see that Claudia Winkleman and Davina McCall aren't the same person.
I've never heard of Claudia Winkleman before you posted here ... off to google her.
Edit: hmm, not sure if I've ever seen her before, but she's nothing like Davina. Claudia's got quite hefty features, a bit Punch-like.0 -

The £5 text thing was my motivation to donate. That was so much easier than phoning up. I was juggling Comic Relief, Mewbie's jokeathon and my addiction to American Idol so already had plenty to do, the text thing made it a lot easier.
It was mine too....
I may not have a lot but it was the child dying that did it for me, I was in floods of tears and the thought that it could have all been prevented with a £5 net made the deaths all so pointless. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

They have the same mannerisms. Its very odd seeing them stand next to each other because they stand the same way and both do that strange hand thing that Davina does. Though Claudia is more giggly and ladylike whereas Davina is definitely a ladette. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? It makes sad, but mostly angry. How many times have we seen the conferences and the posturing from our leaders about various Africa initiatives? The same millions counted and presented multiple times, while the unseen debt burden continues to grind and we still rob their land of any riches they once owned. It was mine too....

Note also that the odd fifty million here and there seems to pale into insignificance when compared to being able to print 75 BILLION pounds to try to inflated a crooked, twisted, greed driven capitalist society.
It's great that people do individual things to help, but it's appalling that it is required. I would rather see charitable contributions to support our illegal wars and regular taxation to make this a world we can have some pride, rather than shame in.
Sorry folks - went into one for a bit. Next time around it might be "sponsor mewbie to !!!!!!".0 -
There was one individual who donated £6m last night (it wasn't me), so that goes some way to the difference. Plus when you add in inflation..
I guess people like myself also had a bit of change from our redundancy packages this year, so donated more than usual
matched betting: £879.63

I think a lot of it was to do with how emotional the presenters were.
Fern Cotton and Davina McColl were both visibly upset whilst presenting the show and I think that emotion does come accross to the viewers.0 -
I did something funny for money,I gave comic relief 5 minutes then went to blockbuster to get out In Bruges. lmao.0

I don't normally watch it,and gave to the collection at work on Thursday,as did DH. I flicked channels though late on last night and was faced with Davina Mcall watching a child die,a mother dying, and so through tears, donated via paypal. It is emotive TV and usually I have my reservations about that, but suddenly, the ends did justify the means for me.
Maybe in these troubled times we can still see where the real issues lie?0 -

I wasn't entirely sure if I was crying more from the video or from the fact that Fern and Davina were crying, and when that other blonde lass passed-out in the Childrens hospital in Uganda it gave a really hard lesson in how truly dreadful these places must be.
I think the vids were (rightly) much tougher this year, and I particularly liked Davinas joke about Fred the Shred maybe donating £650K (:rotfl: ) fat chance. To watch a tiny child slip into a coma and know that he was going to die when a mere £5 could prevent it was chilling: and both my kids immediately dug money out of their money boxes (despite the fact that they knew that a decent donation of money raised by myself and several friends had already gone off) and said that they would feel like they had saved one kid each
.
However, it is worth noting that relatively small amounts of money can also help some of the desperate cases that exist here in the UK (for instance that poor little lad that is looking after his entire family, or the children living with the effects of drugs or alcoholism) and also that this year they intend to spend some of the money on trying to help those affected by domestic violence in the UK.
It was a reality check that I think was much needed. Shame we can't make Fred the Shred and his cohorts sit and watch it over and over again until they actually learn to be human:D . Watching programs like that always makes me very aware of how ludicrous a society is that thinks it is acceptable for one man to have an annual income of £4M and a big fat pension when he fails miserably at the job he was supposed to be expert at:rolleyes: .
I shall get off my soapbox as well - but it needed saying!
