Can I switch if I have an outstanding amount on my bill?

Hi,

I currently have pre-payment meters for both gas and electric which carry an outstanding bill from my old property (which is questionable, but hey  ), that I pay off every time I credit either of the meters.

Would I be eligible to change to another provider and take the bill with me or would I have to clear any outstanding amounts first?

I have never switched gas or electric companies so am absolutely clueless!

Thanks.
