    If your card is anything like mine the bank will be entitled to refuse to honour it because it's the merchant who is required to write the number.

    But the bank have authorised them to hold a cheque and card in the first place so that is irrelevant. The bank have unfortunately trusted someone to represent themselves and have made a bad misjudgement.
