ah but i thought that was the insurance fiddle thing, people was getting insurance and having their newly driving kids as named drivers as it was cheaper.
seen as i will be driving it all the timeIf you want to see the rainbow ,you gotta put up with some rain0 -
best thing you can do if you got a couple of hours spare is trawl through the insurance quotes on different options, i.e price for you on fully comp, your dad as driver but you have permission to drive on your policy, and then try if your dad insured but you as a second driver.
Regardless I dont think that if your dad registers car at seperate address to you, you will be able to insure the car, so inevitably he will have to have a policy on it.0 -
apologies for my dreadful spelling errors, cant seem to get spell check to download onto here.0

quick question - how often does the OR do a DVLA search?
just at the start of proceedings?
just asking because I've "borrowed" my mum's (9 year old and worthless) car and wasn't planning to register it in my name until discharge just in caseDogs have owners...my cat has slaves...0 -
FYP how many weeks did you gas and electric bills cover? our gas has dropped down from £25 to 20 a week now, but the electric remains steady at £20, although I am amazed at how much the key meters are at least I don't have a frightening bill to arrive. You could try the tax credits helpline to ask if you have anymore due to you on the payment schedule.
Best wishes to you all for a lovely sunny weekend.

As for the car insurance - if your dad insures the car and lists you as a named driver you will be covered for whatever cover he has. If you still have your car insurance I think you are only covered to drive other cars if you are fully comp. If it is a lot more to insure fully comp than 3rd party F&T then I wouldn't bother because by the sound of it they will most likely write your car off in the event of an accident because it would not be economically worth repairing. That has happened to my husband before.
Anyway whatever you decide phone the insurance company and talk it through with themfirst.

Lisa - the definition of owner of a car seems to be the one that pays for insurance, tax, MOT and petrol. It's not the name on the registration document. However, I have read that the OR will check your name with the DVLA. This could raise awkward questions and may look to him like you now have 2 cars.
Since the OR has no interest in your now broken car, you are free to do what you want with it. Sell it, swap it, etc.
I would ask your Dad if he would register it in his name until you get it fixed. That way, it looks like you have swapped cars to the OR if he is just looking at DVLA records. Therefore less likely to raise questions in the first place...
I've only ever seen checks on registration numbers, not names.
The OR made your car exempt, so they have no interest in that car or any replacement - unless it was a very expensive car.0
