my car is exempt but broken do i have to tell OR if i have use of another car

maybe a stupid question but thought id check with you lot first.

my car was made exempt but its broken at the moment so untill its fixed my dad has bought a cheap run about that hes going to let me use till mine gets fixed as mine needs a new gearbox.

im making sure he gets the reciept in his name but he is puting my name on the log book for my insurance.

i wont own the car ever because as soon as mine is fixed hes taking it back off me.

its alot older than my car so is worth alot less mines a R reg this is a M reg but its just to get me from a to b while mine gets fixed.

will i need to tell the OR i now have use of another car? or beacuse they have exempt my car i do not need to notify unless its worth alot of money?

hes picking it up on monday but it needs to go through a MOT he has been advised the car will pass so if all goes well i shall have use of it from about wednesday next week. so just wanted to check before it gets put in my name

I wouldn't bother telling the OR if it was me. Wouldn't it be cheaper and less hassle for your dad to have your car fixed?

  • thanks FYP

no because he wants that car for himself for a cheap run about, so said i can use it till it gets fixed on the condition ill drive him about if he needs anything. ive got my mate whos got a few friends in breakers yards to keep a look out for a gearbox for me if not its gona cost a few hundred. so just got use of it till mine gets fixed.

i am saving but everytime money gets put aside something comes up so may take a few months

Oh I see. I know what you mean - just as I think we are getting ahead financially something comes up. This month we had MOT (£500), car tax end of month, gas & elec bill came in - elec bill was £335 and gas was £290! I couldn't believe it they have never been that high before and the meters were read this time and last time so it is based on actual usage.

... and our tax credits will cease in April - I'm hoping we get one more payment.

  • yeah dreamcatcher not used to this paying cash stuff lark.

also been abit bad with my shopping, where before i used to go shopping once a week where my car has been broke ive been shopping everyday as i can only get so much on my buggy so a few impulse buys have snuck in opps. so my own fault really.

so from now on ive got to be really stricked with my budget

Lisa - the definition of owner of a car seems to be the one that pays for insurance, tax, MOT and petrol. It's not the name on the registration document. However, I have read that the OR will check your name with the DVLA. This could raise awkward questions and may look to him like you now have 2 cars.

Since the OR has no interest in your now broken car, you are free to do what you want with it. Sell it, swap it, etc.

I would ask your Dad if he would register it in his name until you get it fixed. That way, it looks like you have swapped cars to the OR if he is just looking at DVLA records. Therefore less likely to raise questions in the first place...

    Good Morning everyone,

Lisa - I am pleased that you are going to be mobile again..... nothing worse than being without a car when you are used to one for getting about.
I agree with the others, don't mention it to the OR.

What is happening with the fuel bills? like you, fyp, mine are horrendous and I am hardly here during the day! The food bills are creeping up again - Sainsburys think nothing of putting up prices by 10 - 20% overnight on some items. Madness!

    Have a good weekend everyone....

    Good Morning

I would'nt worry, your car is off the road and the OR has agreed you can have one. It's only a cheap temporary replacement. Your only problem could be most insurance companies will not insure a car that is registered at a different address to the driver.

It may be a idea to get your dad to insure it with you as a second driver. (presuming you are keeping your insurance on your broken car or if you have full comp you should be able to drive it with his permission anyway) It should'nt be much more expensive and if your Dad will have the car back it will save you cancellation fees or fees to make adjustments to the insurance later in the year.

FYP how many weeks did you gas and electric bills cover? our gas has dropped down from £25 to 20 a week now, but the electric remains steady at £20, although I am amazed at how much the key meters are at least I don't have a frightening bill to arrive. You could try the tax credits helpline to ask if you have anymore due to you on the payment schedule.

Best wishes to you all for a lovely sunny weekend.

  • i was thinking i might see how much my insurance would be to go full comp.

right does my dad have to have insurance on the car already then? inorder for my fully com insurance to cover it or does my insurance just cover any car that i have permisson to drive whever insured by someone else or not

    sorry im confused with insurance

The car would need to be insured by your dad for you to be able to drive it on your own fully comp cover. Though I think it only gives third party coverage if its you driving it if anything happens.

Do check that you can drive another car though, (as some like simplecover-Norwich union is extremally cheap but even the fully comp doesnt permit you to drive another car)

Don't mean to sound rude but having your Dad insure it should be cheaper as he is older.
