Carpet refit estimate

Hi

We're planning on having our carpets refitted shortly (due to combination of poor original fit and stretch in carpet) and wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what to expect when it comes to quotes?

We have an average sized 3 bed detached house with carpet in all rooms except kitchen and bathrooms.

I'm trying to manage our budget and work out when we'll be able to tick off all the jobs on our list!

They charge around £1.50 per metre.

It depends where you are in the country!

The further North you got the cheaper it gets.

Aim to pay between £ 1.50 per m2 up to £ 3.00 per m2.

You'll also have to pay more if the fitters need to move furniture and empty the room (say £10 per area).

Expect to pay £60 or £70 per room minimum (average size).

I have been quoted for a carpet fit last week. I need 56 sqm of carpet laid and i have been quote £150 for the fit. which is just over £2.50 psqm. In all fairness, the real cost is the carpet, and underlay to a lesser extent. If you call up some of the guys from the NICF, they wont fit for you, but will come and supply carpet and this can work out cheaper than the shops.

So i suggest go to a few carpet shops, find the carpets you like and then go online and call the guys listed on the NICF.

Make sure you don't go with the pressure to buy carpet and the underlay from the larger high street retailers who try to sell you carpet underlay as well as the carpet. You will find it difficult to buy foam underlay from them, this is cheaper, but better thean rubber. You can buy really cheap underlay online, and get your fitter to fit it or do it yourself. If you get the foam stuff its light and easy to lay. Remember, most underlay is made by the same company, such as tredaire and duralay, and even companies like the tradpriced have more than one online store, seemingly competing with it! Get a fitter yourself, you may pay slightly more at times, but just ask what their quote includes. You may find that they include the cost of grippers etc in their price. I saved loads using my own fitter from yellow pages, buying carpet from carpetright, and getting underlay online. For one room I saved over £150, even though the fitter was more expensive. He did a great job though, and you will know where he lives!. Hope this is useful.
