I can't say for certain, but I think the Co-Operative Group are selling off any Somerfield stores in regions where there is already another independent society trading, in order to avoid exactly that problem. There are already situations where two different Co-operative societies are trading in the same area, but this is usually involves very small societies, so you may not even notice.

It may have been that the Co-op chose to sell this particular store rather than were forced too. They are selling off any stores that don't fit into it's portfolio. Maybe it's size or location?

We have a Somerfield near us in Surrey and its being turned into a Waitrose, with the other converting to a Morrisons

I find Co-op more expensive than somerfield. Somerfield have better offers. One of our local somerfields has been turned into an aldi and another is going to be a sainsburys.
