Sommerfield bought by CO-OP

I find Sommerfield (handy though) more expensive (except for deals) for most items.

I have never shopped @ a Co-Op Supermarket (but have convenience Co-Op's around) and wondered if their prices are as keen as The big three?

    They have http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7918963.stm

Prices not as good as the big 3, but a bit better than Somerfield.

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

Just to correct the above post, Co op had to sell over 130 somerfield stores due to the oft and prices are alot better now but not as good as big 3 as they dont have the buying powere

( Slightly bias) I work for co operative food logistics.

Somerfieleds are still trading as will take upto 2 years to rebrand and refit all the stores and products as co operative re branding is ongoing and have re fitted 700 stores in the last 2 years

Will be confusing for some people in some areas , they will have 2 different types of Co-Op's in the same village/town with different pricing and different dividend cards.

    Hi All,

In Liverpool City Centre, the Somerfield on Lord Street has apparently been sold to Tesco due to this sale. Quite why any competition laws would insist they sold that one seem odd, as there are no other Co-ops or Somerfields in Liverpool City Centre.

As for Tesco, there is already Tesco Superstore in Liverpool One (Hanover Street) a Tesco Metro on Parker Street and two Tesco Express on Brownlow Hill and Mount Pleasant - All of which are within about 10 mins walk!

On top of this they want to open a Tesco of some sort on London Road in Liverpool, so with the Somerfield when it gets rebranded, that'll be 6 in the City Centre alone!

    Cheers

We find the Co-op can be slightly more expensive on normal goods, but often the deals and end-of-day reductions are equal to if not better than those offered by the bigger stores around here, so it balances out.

There's also the added bonus that the Co-op is generally more ethical, eco-friendly etc, and we almost always find the quality of their own brands better than other stores equivalents.

We only have Scottish Coop (now called The Cooperative!) here in the islands. I find they can be a bit more expensive on a standard shop although they can have great offers and their end of day reductions can be good too.
My mum lives in Lanarkshire and there is Scotmid (part of the Coop) and Scottish Coop (The Cooperative) within a few miles of each other and I am not sure how it works with cards now (certainly when it was dividend and not membership cards they did not share the same one!).
The Coop is also good for Fair Trade and ethical foods at reasonable prices.
I'd choose them over Somerfield any day!

Not round us they're not -- we have a Co-Op and a Somerfield within walking distance (until 15th April, when the latter closes to change to a Morrisons), and I never buy anything in Co-Op unless it's a special offer or 'Whoopsie'. I've yet to find anything in store that's cheaper on full price

Our Somerfield is closing in April and changing to Morrisons!! That will make a big difference to the Tesco here (small town only have a Tesco and a Somerfield) can't wait!!!
