Packed Lunches that will keep for 2 days?

Options
Hi ,

We are off to Disneyland Paris next week- can't wait. :D

I am trying to come up with food ideas that will last from thursday to saturday.

Apart from the obvious crisps and sweets I was wondering if anybody knew of anything else we could use?

We wont have a fridge when we get there.

Well done to you, hope you enjoy it.
Is it self catering you're going on? In a car?
Could you put a couple of tins of tuna or salmon in?
It's mostly tinned stuff I'm thinking of, like fruit with a ring pull top?
Sugar Puffs are good straight from the box! ;)

We are going by Eurostar. We have breakfast paid for already and we are definatly going to eat out every night. I was reading reviews and people were saying that a burger and chips in the park is £12!

There are 6 of us going so will add up. I just want a few ideas that will keep the lunch costs down. :)

Loaves of bread would keep as would sunflower margarine (I think:confused: ) and along with the tuna you could make sandwiches. What about crackers/ryvitas, jam, I would have thought cheese would keep for a couple of days, pickle, tomatoes, cucumber, fruit. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

Be very careful with dips, I got an upset tummy last year from taramasalata that had been out of the fridge for a couple of days when we were camping.

You can actually buy fresh bread, fruit and fillings at very reasonable prices in supermarkets in Paris! We always do when we go through Paris and we did the same when we went to Disneyland for a week.

Presumably you will have a hotel room so you can organise your sandwiches there. To save money and for convenience you could bring a knife to chop veg and cut bread, cheese, fruit etc, also plastic sandwich boxes and a couple of teatowels, and of course a thermos for that very important cup of tea! You can buy biscuits, little chocolate bars and treats in shops there, the food is actually CHEAPER than in the UK in most shops.

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Will your family eat things like tinned ham or corned beef? You could put pickle in a small jar or take tomatoes.

Are you staying in Disneyand or nearby-if so it might be worth checking if there are any food shops in the area.

DH and I stayed in Paris last year and found it was cheaper and easier to have lunch out. We would then buy bread, cheese , ham etc on the way back to the hotel and have a picnic in our room-we were too tired to go out in the evenings.

You won't save anything by buying food this side of the channel. Buy your food en-route, it's cheaper and nicer.

Equipment: I'd recommend, from experience, a powered coolbox if you have one, lightweight chopping board (fleximats from lakeland are ideal), bread knife and paring knife, cutlery, kitchen paper and storage bags. Buy the 'pain rustic' type of bread (flat and oval/round), stick your filling in and slice, much easier than sliced bread.

If you're staying in Disneyworld then stock up at one of the large supermarkets (you can't miss the signs!) or find a pretty place to stop and wander. If you're staying off site then buy your bread fresh in the morning and enjoy all the local produce.

I have to stop now, I'm salivating at the memories of the patisseries and boulangeries... mmmmmm....

  • I keep a checklist on my computer for picnic and travelling food (yes, I'm severely anal about that sort of thing.)

When I moved, I left my old Girl Guide tuck kit at home, but here's a good basic replacement:

    1 serrated knife
    X number of spoons
    X number of forks
    X number of plastic plates
    X number of plastic cups

*NOTE: I don't mean disposables. I mean the cheap plastic ones you get on special offer in department stores.

    Food that keeps well:

    - Granola bars and flapjacks (often reduced in the bakery section, but they last up to a week if properly sealed)
    - Whole hard-skinned fruit (apples, oranges, plums, grapes, melon, etc.)
    - Whole veg
    - Potato salad (trust me - mayo does not go off that fast)
    - Flat granary breads (not as susceptible to squashing, better nutrition and more filling)
    - Leftover chicken or Sunday roast, sliced and Tupperwared (I firmly believe these will last at least 12 hours if kept out of the sun, and a good microwaving fixes everything... and I never get sick from food)
    - Dry cereal
    - Well-wrapped hard cheese (Leerdammer, red Leicester, double Gloucester) or one with a rind (Gouda, Edam)

Have fun! I've been to Paris, but never anything Disney... I'm sure you'll have a blast.
