I have an online current account with Alliance & Leicester since last November as I have had nothing but nightmares with NatWest. I set up a monthly payment to my debit card with a company coming into effect in January.
However the mistake came when my salary was paid into my NatWest account and not the new one, and I called the company to ask them to debit my old NatWest card instead as there was not sufficient funds and I had not yet closed that account.
After saying that they would do this for me, they accidentally managed to debit my new account by accident. Alliance & Leicester charged me £25.00 in charges, so I called them and explained the situation and they agreed to refund it as a gesture of goodwill. In the meantime, the company had refunded my card, so the only thing keeping me in my overdraft was the £25.00 charge! I knew that there was a £5 charge per day for staying in my overdraft, but I wrongly assumed that as part of the gesture of goodwill they would not charge this because the overdraft was due to their first charge.
I did get charged for this anyway on the 2nd March, by which time I'd already told the company that I had been refunded so I can't see them deciding to reimburse me for this second charge. I called them and was told that they can only provide one gesture of goodwill per account and that this would be regarded completely separately. I was not happy with this as it relates to the same issue and my staying 5 days in my overdraft was due to them, so I wrote a complaint and my response answered none of my questions but was a generic leaflet about the ongoing bank charges court case, which is going to take forever.
So now I don't know what to do for the best, the company who made the mistake have questioned why they allowed the transaction in the first place as there were insufficient funds and I am not sure why either. I don't know if I have a leg to stand on now or if I should just give up and wait for the result of the test case.
Anyone have any ideas?

Write them a further letter explaining the situation, and requesting that as they agreed the first one as goodwill over this incident, they should agree the second one - as it's all part of the same problem and not indicative of your behaviour as a whole. Send it signed for to their headquarters.
If they still refuse to budge, move. What would William Shatner do?0
