Do you want Family Tree Maker, the 6 months free membership is it Premium?
A couple of questions you need to ask yourself.
The parish records Ancestry go on about are I have to say mainly London area, so check if you can in advance they have what you are looking for.
Also don't forget to check FreeREG and Familysearch.org to see what they have available online for free.
Some counties have also websites called OPC ( Online Parish Clerks) if you happen to hit lucky on one of those, it is hit and miss though, then you can get loads of parish records.
I would if you can try and access Ancestry at the library just to see what they have. Mind you the Ancestry at the libraries is called Library Edition and some things are not available to see on that but give it a go first if you can.If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -

Thanks, yes it does have premium membership. I used Ancestry's free trial last year and was quite happy with it. I've used it since and i know there are a few folks on there that have trees matching mine. I've used FreeBMD and FreeCEN and FreeReg already but I do find some of the free records are missing.
As i said in my previous post, no libraries do it in my area, i've just heard back from the last one and they said no as a county they don't do it...:0 -
Shame your county doesn't do it, mine does and Find My Past at the main local studies library.
Yes the family trees can be of use, someone recently has found a completely new line no one knew about on a family tree I am connected with, (there was an illigitimate child no one knew about) but I have to say you do need to confirm the research yourself.
There are a number of trees on Ancestry featuring one of my lines all copied from each other. How do I know? They all feature the same mistake. If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -

It is a shame but i think it's something Scotland doesn't do as whole as i'm on the border of two counties and both of them have said they don't do it...
I always see each record as an indicator, we've just been tracing a relative and their relatives and the surname was spelt incorrectly 4/5 times which was the reason why we couldn't find certain people!
One of the trees i know has a mistake in it to do with my Great Grandfather who they think was born a couple hundred miles away from where he was actually born.
Mistakes do happen with family history and one thing I've learn't is what you think is a simple line is never so!0 -
Scotland is different, especially with Scotlandspeople being so different to the English sites.
Yes you will find some people just blindly copy what is one another tree without checking anything themselves, they are known as name collectors, the sort of people who E Mail you on Genes reunited saying can I see your tree? without ever saying how they think they are related to you.If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -
Couldn't find anywhere to post this query so bumped this thread.
I bought Family Tree Maker and have used the 6 months free membership for Ancestry.
Membership has now run out so I bought another Family Tree Maker using my Tesco Reward Points and have another 6 months free membership for Ancestry.
My Tree is on my desk top linked to Ancestry and my question is this :
To renew my membership do I have to uninstall the previous Family Tree Maker or do I just go to Ancestry and input the new code ?:o
Sorry to be such a numpty but I'm not a savvy IT lady even though I've been using laptop and family history research for years  I'm fairly new to Ancestry
I do hope some kind and gentle person can lead me to do this correctly as I would hate to lose any info from my treeThere's no place like home
Feeling down? Weak in body? Makes no difference to me, I think of you all when I'm sitting quietly.
Hugs and healing thoughts are always going your way.0 -
I did a similar thing and didn't know what was best to do. I decided to use a different computer to install the new FamilyTree package just in case it messed up the original one on my own computer. Once it was installed and I'd activated the 6 months free membership, I uninstalled the software and my friend's computer was back to normal.
Hopefully you have someone who will let you do the same on their computer. Unless someone out there knows more than we do!!
