Getting Deposit back from ex landlord

Right well I moved out of my old house just over a year ago, and when we left the landlord claimed that we had Wrecked the carpets and that he would need to replace them before he could let the place out, as a result of this he said he would retain the whole of my deposit, stupidly I let it go, because I had alot going on at the time with my dad in hospital, organising my wedding and my stepdad on his deathbed with terminal cancer.
Anyway I found out from our friends who lived in a house 2 doors down (owned by same landlord) that as soon as we moved out he gutted the whole place, including ripping out internal walls replacing staircase and the floors.
Now im no expert but surely he cant charge me to replace the carpet when he has gutted the whole place.
Is it worth me pursuing him for our money back?
