Tax Havens - a good thing ?

I've been listening to podcasts of interviews with John Christiansen and Prem Sikka about tax havens and tax evasion/avoidance in general.

It all sounds like the wealthy elite companies and individuals avoiding paying their fair share of tax.

e.g half the profits booked on a bumch of bananas gets recorded through tax havens. Is this morally right?

But....I could be wrong.

Do tax havens have a legitimate use?

They provide employment and income for the natives of the tax haven.

Tax havens are great if you're rich and want to have a source of income you don't declare.

I guess the only thing morally correct about tax havens is that it's not for the British Government to set the banking rules for other countries. They hardly set a good example do they!

People should pay the tax they owe though.

Interestingly, Jersey has 8,000 families living on the breadline....and it's only a small place. It hasn't helped them?

About half the worlds' tax havens fly the Queen's flag.

I'd suggest its something in which we lead the world !

I've lived in two tax havens. :) Jersey not being one of them!

One, in particular, has no natural resources, is better for tourism than it used to be, but would really not be on the map if it were not for tax haven status. FWIW I'm in full agreement with Gen here, but I was being a little flippant in reply.

I'm not challenging anyone here LIR, it's ok.

But, if we are looking for extra funds to support UK plc, well there are billions here left untapped.

Handily, it would fit in with Obama's tax haven campaign too.

Interesting thought, the tax havens of the Worlds! Inter Planetary tax havens.

Does the Queen have her own flag?

Tax Havens are a great way for criminal organisations to hide their assets
