Barclaycard to launch new loyalty/points scheme later this year?

I've just had a very interesting conversation with a lady at Barclaycard. I rang to cancel my card as I haven't used it for about 3 years. I always pay off my credit cards in full every month and I stopped using Barclaycard when they dropped the Nectar points scheme (I now have a Nectar Amex card instead) - cutting the card up to avoid temptation! I also got the letter (mentioned in other posts) about the drop in interest rates so this prompted my call to them.

The lady in the Barclaycard loyalty department told me that they are going to launch a new points/loyalty/cashback scheme in September this year which would suit me as I would only use a card that gave me something back. She advised that I keep my account open and wait and see if the new scheme will appeal to me a which point I can ask for a replacement card or go ahead and cancel. She also put a £20 credit on my account as a gesture of goodwill!! (I had been a custmer since 1989).

Intersting news, will wait with baited breath to see what's revealed!!:D

  • Even if the scheme is on a par with 1% cashback cards, I would probably give it a miss given Barclaycard have a track record of reducing the value of their reward schemes (eg cashback).

A Metro newspaper news item today indicated that what is planned is for the new scheme to reward customers using retailers signed up to Barclays payment systems (which to be fair that does cover a fair percentage of retailers).

Goldfish has been taken over by Barclays. I don't know if it is open to new customers, but you get one point for every pound spent. You need 1,750 points to get a £10 voucher.
You can trade in points for vouchers e.g. John Lewis, Argos, etc
Of course only use if you pay off full balance at the end of the month.
  • I posted something similar yesterday (link).

In my case, they offered me 2% cashback for 6 months from the date of my next statement.

The main difference with other cards is that the cashback can be claimed on a credit card purchase at the point of sale or accrued and taken off a future purchase - again, at the point of sale. This makes it better than my Capital One card.
