For working out the MPG use this page just needs litres and miles.

Crumbs just worked out my rough mpg (thanks for the proper calculations ;)) and its about 25 mpg round town!! Just had a panic up!

But just looked up my car make and age (96) and it's expected to be that for city driving anyway - so looks like it's doing ok on petrol :o

Or if your car does 450 miles and you put 45 litres in you're doing 45 mpg! 10 miles per litre = 45mpg (roughly) so any small/medium diesel doing less that 10 miles per litre is not very economical.

But as said above driving style/type of journeys makes a huge difference. Many years ago my clio 1.9D did well over 55mpg even when thrashed but no doubt newer clios are much heavier.

Here is another calculator that works on distance covered and how much you filled up with.. MPG calc - it is half way down the page. I am using this alot to determine my average week on week.

These online calculators are great but really you need to understand the arithmetic behind it and 1 minute on a calculator will do the job for you.

And just to be pedantic a gallon is 4.55 litres :)
    Actually it's 4.54609188...

I made a little spreadsheet that does all this for you - just fill your tank up to the brim, reset the trip counter, then when you next fill up, fill it to the brim and write down the mileage and the amount of fuel you needed to refil the tank (i.e. the amount you used).

Usually petrol stations have pens at the counter anyway - just write mileage, Litres (usually on the recipt but not always) and price and then put it in my spreadsheet and it will work it all out for you.

It's got different rows for different fuels because I am using it to see what fuel my car likes best - so far the results are quite interesting.

That is quite interesting but could be explained by different driving conditions and how much was left in the tank.

However I would be interested to see how this pans out in the long term.

Driving conditions are pretty much the same (I thought the same, but I did 2 runs on Tesco ultimate yeilded only a 0.1 MPG difference.

The BP differs because I went drag racing once, and the Shell ones differ because before my tyres were underinflated.

I've done Tesco a LOT and it always gives me 36-odd, now re-doing Shell...

I am happy that Proton rate my car for 34 MPG, though - as I thoroughly smashed that :P
