Price Quoted for cloak room

I was given a price to tile a very small existing cloak room and install a toilet and wash basin Price given £340 pounds for grout etc and labour . With me to supply everything else .
I asked him today to extend tiling right up to the ceiling from the half way.
He rang me tonight to say it would cost me another £300 for this work which he has already done .
I was so so shocked and very upset He now says that he has had to pay for a pipe which cost £50 and flexabile ply and the extra tiling.
He says he charges £30 per metre which is fair enough but is he right at chucking all the other prices at me I said I would pay him 150 pounds for extra tiling 5 metres Dreading the ill feeling tomorrow.
Am I right to stand my ground I hate confrontations Help me feel better

Talk it out with him but dont allow yourself to be trodden on. Dont get angry let him know that you have agreed a price and if he wants to walk away you can get it finished by someone else. How does it relate to hours worked from what he has recieved and what he wants.0

I have talked to him and agreed to pay 150 pounds for the 5 metres of extra tiling He has agreed this very reluntantly I believe he has probabably underestimated the work He has been here two days and will not finish til lunch time tomorrow He keeps telling me I have bought the wrong things toilet, taps ,bottle neck etc Spent about three hours running round for reducers and piping and I dont know what I am talking about My sister said its a good job I am not having an extension So distressed0

He should have sourced the ancilliary parts needed to install the loo and basin. Ok, he would have to cross charge you for the parts and his time to collect them, but that's better than you running around trying to get parts you know nothing about and them him moaning. He sounds like a bit of a tit!....Happiness, is a Kebab called Doner.....:heart2::heart2:0

The work looks tatty
He has fitted a small basin but the flexi water pipes are showing surely this is wrong
The toilets loose ans he was supposed have boxed in the pipe is the loo .
Well he has the one side only which looks stupid and he has left a gap
It always happens to me I always get the workmen from hell He came with good references How do you get a good one0 -

You shouldn't have paid him if you were not happy with the work..
If it looks tatty then he should not be charging top dollar (£ 30 /m2 excl mtls) for tiling.
Flexi pipes visible. Not wrong but not very professional. If the pipework was to be visible it should as a minimum be done in copper so that it can be painted or perhaps in chromed copper - IMHO.
If the toilet is loose - irrespective of whether you have paid him that is unsafe and he should correct it.
If he was supposed to box in the pipe then he should have done.It always happens to me I always get the workmen from hell He came with good references How do you get a good one
So the upshot is that you are very unhappy with his work which you have paid him for. So you should call him back to correct it to an acceptable standard. There is no excuse for sub-standard or shoddy workmanship. You can
1. Accept it and live with it.
2. Get him back to correct the work at his cost.
3. Get someone else in to correct the work - you'll have to pay though.
If he refuses then you have a number of choices including; reporting him to Trading Standards and showing his work to the people that provided the good references and ask them if it is acceptable to them.
