    Some people can't teach.

Shortening the training course only effects the middle group.

There is the group who can teach but can't support themselves financially for a year while they train.

True bristol-pilot...however most shortage subjects (maths, science, engineering) have quite large subsistance grants to help pay for fee's and now-a-days most PGCE or GTP students study in their home towns to cut down on living costs.

You don't need a teaching qualification to teach in the private sector.

The GTC is calling for private teachers to register - soon this tradition may crumble and qualified status may be required.

Just bumping up my own thread to see if there is still interest in this topic...are they any potential trainee teachers who want to share their thoughts on this topic?

I'd be a trainee teacher ... except it takes too long. Isn't it 4 years? And not sure when it'd start ... October? And isn't that batch already full? So October 2010... then 4 years. So, qualify in June 2014.

I'd be starting older than most of them retire at!

Depends do you have a degree related to the subject you want to teach. If yes then it's only a year doing a PGCE. If not then you can do a degree leading to Qualified Teacher Staus - you'll do a degree and another year studing towards a PGCE.

No. No degree at all. Nada. Nowt. People didn't do them "in my day".
So that makes 4 years: degree + PGCE.
  • Hi,
I think this is really unfair, I am a mature student who has spent the last three years working, bringing up my 3 children and studying full-time for a degree so that I can do my PGCE, which I will have to pay for. Now the government is going to let these people walk into the job after only six months! How can this be good? Where is the motivation for me to do a years PGCE?

Yep you would be right - 4 years. Unless you went private - then experience can be an advantage...
