Problems with Chevrolet Matiz not starting

I have an 05 registered Matiz with 15k miles, purchased from new.
The 3 year warranty expired August 2008.
I went shopping and when I returned to my car, it wouldn't start. The engine was turning over, but not starting.
I called out Recovery who couldn't get it started either, they checked & said there wasn't a spark going to the sparkplugs?
Had to get it towed home. A friend who is a mechanic has looked at it & at first thought it was the coil pack, but was unable to order one locally, so, he contacted the main Chevvy dealer who said they doubted that it was the coil as they had never had one fail before?
My friend had someone else use some sort of electrical test on it, and this showed no fault.
He is now saying that it may be the crankshaft sensor, or, if not, it must be the ECU, which I don't think I can afford to have replaced.
I know the car is outside of the warranty, but, as I only have 15k miles, would I have any sort of comeback with the dealer?
Any help much appreciated.

Could be a sensor. although saying that, back in 2001 we had a MyTits 800cc which had a similar problem but this was the fuel pump.0
