Additional items I want to add to household insurance

Hi
I am new to household insurance and I am unsure about one area of the insurance.
I have purchased a few items which are fairly expensive and want to know how to add them to my renewal insurance.
I have purchased a few items which I think I should add onto my household insurance e.g. I recently purchased a Mac book pro valued at £1800
How do I go about adding this item to my household insurance. Do I need tell the insurance company in detail what I have purchased and the value or can I just say I have some additional value of items I want to add?
On my renewal docs. It mentions contents which is broken down into household goods and high risk items. The value set aside for these are fairly high already, is this where the value would increase? if so does the insurance price increase steeply or just by a few pound?
If anyone could advise me on this, it would be most appreciated.
thanks

You need to check a couple of things.
Firstly the limit for your high risk items as a whole and secondly your "single item limit".
Commonly the single item limit is something like £1500, so anything under that amount would not need to be seperately insured provided that it's covered by the sum total.
If you have any expensive items then you need to add them on.
You will need to ring your insurer for this.
You need to give a short description and price (make sure this is the replacement new price).
It should not drastically increase your premium, but obviously it depends how many and what amounts you are adding.0 -
Just call your insurer and say you've bought some things and aren't sure if they are covered or not, so want to check.
You could just say "I want to increase my total contents by £10k" (or whatever they add up to), but only if they're all standard items. If you're unsure, the safest thing to do is to run through each item.
Run through each thing - all you'll need to say is, for example, a laptop worth £1800. They'll tell you if it's covered under your standard terms, and also if its classed as a high risk item or a standard item. If it's not covered, it will need to by specified on the policy and then they may ask for a bit more detail.
By the way, do you currently have accidental damage cover? It tends to be quite expensive but may be worth adding if you have items like laptops around. Covers things like dropping items, spilling drinks on them (usually fatal to laptops), etc. If you don't already have it, it might be worth asking what it would cost and deciding if you think it's worthwhile.0 -
If you do not already have it then it would be worth adding "Unspecified Personal Effects" or sometimes its called "Unspecified Personal Belongings" to your policy. This covers Personal Effects eg laptops, cameras, baggage, glasses etc AWAY from the home. This typically covers items typically valued up to £1500 without you needing to specify them. If you have any items over the "Single Article" limit eg say £1500 eg your £1800 lap top then they need to be specified. This normally covers them for dropping, spilling things on them, theft and losing etc. Note some Insurers require all lap tops and mobile phones to be specified irrespective of value.
It would therefore be wise to take Sarah's advise and ring your Insurers and go through each item with them. As always make a note of the persons full name and the date / time you spoke to them in case there is a dispute over what was said in the furture.
P.S Bikes are not always covered under the above section so check with the Insurers if you have any bikes.0 -
