credit score affecting getting a mortgage.

Hi,
I already have one mortgage and recently applied for another one with C&G who turned it down due to my credit score not being good enough. I got my credit report from Experian as I've never been denied credit before and thought I had a good credit score. I saw on here that two payments had been missed to vodaphone by my brother who got a mobile phone contract in my name! This has had a ridiculously big effect on my credit score even though I have never missed any other payments and have another mortgage!I have settled the account with vodaphone but my score still hasn't changed and I can't even reapply for my mortgage with C&G until it has changed. I will end up losing money if I can't resolve this and have come here to see if there is anywhere I can get a mortgage with this credit score problem or if I can explain the situation to C&G and perhaps they will approve it? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ive just looked at my credit score on Experian, it was 967, its rated as good, but looking at it from the other side its 33 less from perfect (1000) ,im judged as low risk.

As I hope to buy within the next 12-18 months would be interesting to know if others think it will be good enough to be accepted for a mortgage and a decent rate.

I would say if 2 payments are missed by your brother for a mobile phone and you were refused thats very very harsh..

Ive never been refused credit either.

OP says the mobile contract was in his name. How is the company meant to know it wasn't "really" him? And why was the brother doing it?

It will depend on whether you agreed to let your brother take a mobile phone contract in YOUR name. If you did, then there's nothing you can do (and the fact that he wanted it in your name should be the clue as to why you should not agree!!!), and if he didn't ask your permission, then that's FRAUD, and your only way of getting it removed is reporting your brother...
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

You'll have to ask my brother:mad: ! I don't know why you have bothered replying with absolutely no help and just asking questions, I've posted to get some advice and help and people like yourself do not help, luckily there are others with good advice and who want to help.

pinkshoes has a point. Like it or not YOU are responsible for paying that phone bill. If payments are not made on debts in your name then this will be reflected in the information on your credit reports. You can explain to C&G that the missed payments were not down to you but then you have to also explain why you were involved in fraud - so that doesn't make you seem any better of a risk. My advice would be to accept the rejection and work on making sure your credit is squeaky-clean.

That might involve cancelling the phone contract. Which I'm sure you only did for your brother out of the goodness of your heart and to help him. But his actions are damaging to you so you need to have a good, long think about whether you want to help him or help yourself more. If it's the former then you should be prepared to wait longer to get a mortgage because it's likely that he will make mistakes with money again.

From the sound of it, he also has a poor credit score for whatever reason. It might be more helpful for both of you if you point him in the direction of this site and let him find out how to get his own credit report in a good state.
  • You allowed your credit card to be used by someone else.
    It had consequences.
It might happen again. So your credit rating has been downgraded. I would like to say something helpful so I will just say good luck.
