Why not have tax relief on rents as well? In the old days of MIRAS the 2 groups who benefitted were those buying their homes and those in receipt of housing benefit. Working people who couldn't afford to buy a house got nothing. I wouldn't like to see a return to that unfair situation.

Social housing tenants are already subsidised and they get maintenance and decorating done too.

What area of the country do you live in? Where we are council tenants don't get any decorating done. I know someone who had their window replaced - it got broken by one of the children, but they were billed for it. The council told them they would be billed when they rang asking if it could be repaired.

Obviously essential maintenance is done for nothing - like boiler repairs etc

Private tenants also get their maintenace done and probably their decorating.

Private tenants SHOULD get their maintenance done, but unfortunately not all landlords fulfil their legal responsibilities (not all tenants do either!). My tenants are responsible for their own interior decorating - that certainly seems to be the norm around here.

As for social housing tenants, remember I was talking about working tenants. In this area you cannot get social housing if you are working.

Home counties. Yep, round here it's a room every 2 or 3 years (can't remember which).

What sort of an incentive is that.

I think MIRAS for 5 years for fist time buyer is a great idea of getting the market moving - an I've advocated it on many occasions to my MP.

It should not be extended to BTL properties however (as they're not FTB!!)

ALL of the interest payments already receive full relief against tax on investment properties

Where we live it makes no difference whether you are working or not your housing assessment is based on need not employment status.

The council will tell you (whether or not you work), to look for private rented and will help with the deposit if you are unemployed or low paid.

Even if you are in private rented you can still put your name on the council waiting list.

Of course you can put your name down, but unless you are an unemployed with kids and preferably a lone parent, you'll never actually get a council or housing association house.
