I noticed this http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/mar/06/waitrose-turns-discounter

Perhaps a thread for offers/good value for money items may be useful.

    Hi OP

Still think that Waitrose is too expensive for me on a regular basis, very occasionally I will go in to get a few bits reduced price - the really discount the end of day stuff, but generally it is too pricey and to poncey for everyday!

A 1.5kg chicken for £2.99 sounds good value for money.

It's generally too expensive for me too, but as it's the only supermarket in walking distance from me I do tend to shop there a lot. I've found coupon use coupled with buying lots of red-stickered stuff really helps bringing the cost down, and they have started doing a lot more offers lately.

It's the fact they take coupons though that really takes the sting out of the shop! I could go to tesco but then I have a 2.50 bus fare to take into account too and as I do several shops a week rather than 1 large one (due to no car) sometimes waitrose can work out a similar cost to a tesco bill.

I have to admit I do a weekly shop at Waitrose and as previous poster has said the red stickered items (I know that my local Waitrose reduces at 11am every day) and money off vouchers bring the bill down considerably. I also find a lot of items the same price as, if not cheaper than, other stores. Coupled with this the good offers, good quality, good customer service, good supplier ethics and very nice staff it makes it a very pleasant store to shop in. I have done a comparison on mysupermarket.com before now and, with the items I buy, Ocado (which uses Waitrose stuff) has come out cheaper on more than one occasion.

    Edit: there's another thread here

I agree - provided you are price savvy Waitrose can and does offer good value for money. As for the quality of the meat and fruit/veg I don't mind paying slightly more. They do have very good offers which is why I shop at both Waitrose and Tesco or Asda depending on what I need and who is cheapest. It is also good from a conscience point of view to know where the meat/dairy comes from and that Waitrose is commited to supporting the farmers.

Waitrose is a much nicer place to shop, sometimes when you've had a hard day that can make a bigger difference than the cost as far as I'm concerned.
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
