Waitrose have announced that they're introducing a new essentials range of groceries so thought I'd start a new thread where anyone that's tried any of them can report back on quality/cost/comparison with other stores' budget ranges.

This is not a budget range.most of it is the current own label lines all being brought together in a cupboard staples range. There are price reductions of about 25% on some of these lines but you will be dissappointed if you are expecting some thing like asda smart prices.0

If I wanted to pay Asda Smart prices then I'd shop at Asda
I don't think anyone who shops at Waitrose will be expecting 'bargain basement' prices but if we can buy good quality food for less money then fantastic!
I know I've found myself shopping there less and less over the past 6months, in favour of cheaper supermarkets such as Aldi, so I'm looking forward to going back and trying this new range :T“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Ok,It is just in all the press as a budget range and its not.I wouldn't want any one to make a special trip as I feel the newspapers have been misleading.0

Just been to my local Waitrose and only saw a couple of ready meals in the essentials range. I suppose they have to get rid of old stock first. Got some good reduced items and used about £2.50 of vouchers:D and the staff are friendly and very helpful. Will look out again next week.0

I tried the Essentials Stewing Beef this evening to make a curry and have to say it is very good indeed! The cut is beef skirt, which you just don't see in supermarkets at all and only from proper butchers, not these that buy their meat ready jointed from wholesalers

Anyway, despite skirt usually requiring long slow cooking, this was ready and melt in the mouth soft after just an hour in the oven at gas 4. And at just £3.50 was an absolute bargain for such good quality meat! :T“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Bought this at the weekend, think it was about £5.50 for 1kg and it was absolutely delicious. Don't usually buy many joints of meat so don't know how the price compares, but was very nice.Heard the Shaggy Taxi Wind Up Phone Call?

I think my neighbour bought that cut last weekend and said it was absolutely delicious too. They are definitely getting more "essentials" stuff in now.Bought this at the weekend, think it was about £5.50 for 1kg and it was absolutely delicious.
