Dell Inspiron Laptop cd/dvd drive problem

Dell Inspiron 1300. The cd/dvd drive is not working. The drive spins up then stops, no disks will play. Device Manager shows a yellow mark which I presume means a driver problem. When I click on My Computer, it only shows the 'C' drive and no other.
I have tried to uninstall the drive and re-install but it gets so far and then says the driver is corrupted Error 39, but when I try to update the driver, it tells me there is no better driver than the one that is installed already and then stops.
There is no driver on the Dell site to download, there is only a firmware update which I can't apply as the drive isn't being seen.
I have been thinking it was time for a reformat anyway so tried to do that but although the Windows disk will start to load from a restart, it only loads the files needed then stops. There is an error message saying something about Windows has been stopped to protect my computer and that there might be a driver problem....or words along those lines.
I'm completely at a loss to know what to do now. Any ideas?

Both DVD drives (one is a RW) on my Vista DELL Dimension E520 stopped working properly.
- Re-boot did not improve the situation.
- The eject button opened/closed the trays, but the disk would not spin-up.
- Opening an Explorer window showed that drives E:/F: were not there.
- Examining Desktop-Control Panel-Device Manager-DVD/CD-ROM Drives showed that both were reporting warnings (as described by the original poster.)
- Asking Windows to find a solution was hopeless - it finished without reporting anything, neither success nor failure
- Requesting driver update just got the response that the driver was up-to-date
Following the Microsoft link above and running their "Fix It For Me" (download) program did the trick.
Both disks available once more without me having to change/load/unload anything else.
