Alternative to BT home Phone?

To try and tighten our belts I have thought about the possibilities of getting rid of our home phone. Both myself and my husband have mobiles with free calling time but don't use all our minutes. Our broadband and tv is through fibre optic (don't think we need a phone line for internet anymore).
If we were to get rid of BT it would save us £30 a month. The only thing is I don't want to actually get it disconected and should we decide to go back on for it to cost us a fortune to get reconnected. I would like for it to be on hold as such. The other thing is, is that no-one will want to call us on mobiles due to the expenses.
Has anyone got ideas to get round this? I do have Skype and Sipgate on my PC, but other members of the household, let's say aren't computer literate enough to use it as I know you can get a gadget so that we could accept calls through the PC 'line' without the PC being on. If there is anything else someone may know of I would be grateful.

Add a phone service to your existing Virgin bundle-negotiate this to get the best deal. Terminate your existing landline phone service. They only disconnect at the exchange, if you want it back at a later date and the line and BT socket are physically intact and require no onsite work, then they usually won't charge for reconnection. No free lunch, and no free laptop
